According to the Minsk agreements, the bloodbath in Novorossia should have ended at midnight on 15th February, 2015. This photo from Slavyansk (see below) is a grief symbol of this bloodshed for many people. The NewsBalt informational and analytical portal managed to find the man in the photo, who is holding a killed girl in his hands, and to talk with him. Mikhail Kovalenko is a doctor, now living in Russia. We don't specify a region because Banderovites are searching for the surgeon-hero.
- Mikhail Georgievich, here is the well-known photography. Ukrainian mass media informed that a father with his daughter were escaping from "separatists" and this girl had been killed by punishers. Is it you in this picture?
- Yes, it's me. I don't know where's this photo come from. Mines that killed this girl arrived from Karachun. An Ukrainian artillery battery, which shelled the town regularly, was positioned there. It is from there the shelling occurred.
- What events are depicted in this photo?
- This happened on the Day of Trinity. My wife and I have just returned from the church. At that time, the public water system didn't work already. There were water wells in a private sector and all the neighbors were walking there to get water. Militiamen dragged a generator over there (there was no electricity by that time either). We heard two explosions. The shelling was aimed at the spot where people were taking water. A militiaman carrying a child in his hands ran out of the corner. Somebody yelled: "There's a doctor!" The combatant gave me the girl. My house was 500 m away from the hospital. I ran over there. After having laid her on a surgical table, I understood that the child was already dead. Earlier, I had been too shocked to see that.
- Who was shelling?
- There's the Karachun hill dominating over the town. This is the only mountain in our region. An Ukrainian artillery battery was positioned there, bombarding the town regularly. It is from there the shelling was conducted. The traces also showed clearly from where the shells arrived. Militiamen never shelled the town, I can vouch for that.
- Many Ukrainians who are backing ATO [anti-terrorist operation] believe that militiamen are firing at themselves.
- A man could be persuaded of many things. I myself was able to convince incurably ill people that they'd be healthy. They believed me.
- Did they recover?
- No, they didn't. They died. However, they believed.
- Mikhail Georgievich, what impressions and recollections have you got of the onset of the war?
- Before that day of Trinity, I had a perception that everything would turn out all right in the end. There was firing in the outskirts but there weren't many victims. The horror began on the 2nd May. It was on the 2nd May, a column of militaries occupying Karachun began firing on the village of Semyonovka. By Donetsk standards, it is a small village, about two hundred farms.
The locals blocked the road to hinder a convoy from going through to Karachun. The locals arranged with a commander of the unit that his soldiers would shoot off ammunition into air and after that give an account to senior officers: "All the ammunition was shot, we had to return". But after making some salvos into air, a regular unit of Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) simply began firing on people. On that day, it was my duty in the hospital.
That was the first real bloodbath. Sixteen people, gunshot wounded, were taken to our hospital. This kind of injuries and the amount of them were a shock for us, physicians, at that time. Three people got bullets into abdominal cavities. One got a bullet into the chest. We lost him. The rest were wounded in legs. We lost four people on that day. The rest survived. After that slaughter, a part of locals ran away to the town, another part kept on living at their houses. A certain balance arose between the Self-Defence Forces (militia) and Ukrainian troops. The militia took positions at the bottom of the mountain, the AFU settled down on the top.
At the initial step, there were four attacks on Slavyansk. Many people among civilian population were injured. There were also wounded militiamen. Nationalists from the Ukrainian National Guard also were brought to us. We provided them an aid. There were very strong shellings of residential areas. My house was also bombed out.
It was very scary when we heard explosions during an operation: there were such explosions that the whole building was shuddering. Militaries are being prepared for this somehow. They know how to hide out, how to behave, generally speaking. We don't know this. My senior surgical nurse perished at thirty metres from the hospital. One house was bombed out from a plane. I've settled down not far away from an airport here. Only after half a year, I ceased to shudder when hearing the airplane's sound.
- Was the workload high?
- For some time, I didn't go out from the hospital at all. Surgeons were needed all the time because injured people were arriving constantly. We didn't divide the people into "these" and "those". We operated on all of them. Sometimes, a militiaman was lying on one cot and a soldier from the National Guard beside him on another.
- Mikhail Georgievich, how a decision to leave for Russia arose?
- After militiamen had gone away, I went away on the 17th July too. Three or four days later. First, to Kharkov and then, to Russia. We found out that the militia was going to leave on the day of their departure. Militiamen came to us and said: "Doctors, we're leaving the town just now. Who wants, you may go with us right away. Get into the cars."
We burnt all the patient histories. The Slavyansk militia consisted mainly of locals. Slavyansk is not a large town by Donetsk standards, about 120,000 citizens. Can you imagine what could happen to their families if the AFU learnt about their gunshot injuries? After the militia left, the whole night was quiet in the town. It was absolutely ringing silence. No people, no Ukrainian soldiers. By about twelve o'clock, first Ukrainian militaries appeared in the town. Naturally, all the people hid out. I was in the hospital then, and I saw two armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) to pass by and come back. They went away before the night. Next day, they appeared again in the afternoon and ran away at night. Only three or four days later, they started to stay in the town for night. They arranged their AFVs in the form of a square to spend the night inside.
- Why did you decide to leave?
- This is personal. I was shot as a person. From cannons, small arms. This can be formulated like this: the Ukrainian government did everything to kill me as an individual. They haven't killed me because I'm cunning. Not because they tried badly - they tried well - but I managed to escape. I just cannot live in the country where the government was firing at me.
- Did they think they were on hostile territory? Were they afraid?
- Yes, they were. They're afraid so far. My friend told me. There is nobody in the town after 6-7 p.m. Nobody goes out. They are patrolling the streets. My friend was late, however, he was returning home before curfew. Suddenly, there was submachine gun burst ten meters away. Without any warning. He jumped aside: "What are you doing?" They said: " Turn and walk around." That is, they are afraid when a civilian goes towards them.
- What have you heard about extrajudicial violence in Slavyansk?
- People vanished. One of my friends disappeared. He was not in militia. Just a small businessman. Most small businessmen financed the militia. His wife, in tears, phoned in August and said that her husband had been absent for three days and it was impossible to find him. So, there are two such facts among my acquaintances.
- Mikhail Georgievich, was it Strelkov who agitated everybody or the people rose up themselves?
- Strelkov appeared in the town which was already ready for uprising. For this reason, all Strelkov's people were locals. It was an actual people's revolt. At the beginning, almost all people were only armed with sawn-off guns and fowling-pieces. There were some German "Schmeisser" rifles and Shpagin submachine guns... Why people took up arms? There had been wide-scale rallies. People began disappearing after these rallies. Moreover, everybody saw pictures from Korsun-Shevchenkov. How buses were burnt, people were beaten and killed. Till the last moment, I had been skeptical about this maidan, treating it with humor, in the same manner as the previous one in 2004. Until the real slaughter began. All of a sudden Right Sector, Tryzub, etc. appeared on the spur of the moment. We hadn't heard about these organizations before. It was then that I was actually scared. For the first time.
- The reason of the resistance was not the fact that you were forced to listen to news in Ukrainian language, was it?
- We've heard from Kiev for many years that those who live in Donbass are not people, they are "Donbassyans". And to speak with these "Donbassyans", only the language of force is acceptable. It has been said that Lviv is a cultural capital, whereas they have a theatre building constructed by Austrians but no theatre company. Along with that, the Donetsk Academic Theatre has staged "The Flying Dutchman", which caused a furor all over the world. There was no information about this in Ukrainian mass media at all. At the same time, the whole Europe was delighted with this "The Flying Dutchman". All this also played its role. We understood that they would not reckon with us. They said: "The government of victors has come to power in Ukraine." Not the government of the whole Ukraine, but the dictatorship of victors.
Everything I've watched in Ukraine was fully described by Feuchtwanger and Remarque. I was feeling myself as if I was one or another character of these novels. Only heroes of "The Black Obelisk" live in a situation when a junta has already lost.
- It can be said, you were face-to-face with nazis, although they were wounded. Maybe, they changed their minds when they saw the results of their "protection of the Motherland" and learnt about killed children and civilians, provided there were no Ukrainian channels around?
- I don't remember their minds changing. You know, it seems to me that the TV doesn't matter. I think there were some psychotropic agents. Those fighters from the National Guard whom I saw were like people under the influence of some other drugs. Possibly, these belonged to the amphetamine group. This seemed to be some military pharmacology, causing a decrease of the anxiety level and the pain threshold, an increase of the muscle tonus and rate of response.
Once I operated on a National Guard fighter who had a mortal wound. His behavior was extremely non-adequate. He was excited and aggressive, didn't feel pain at all. He was getting up and sitting down, with the expression on the face that is difficult to reproduce. The glassy eyes, absolutely non-critical perception of the surroundings... Maybe, this is a subjective view of mine, maybe, I'm mistaken.
I think, the brutality arises in the process. Somebody is more resistent, somebody isn't. Let's take the Khatyn massacre. This was made by Ukrainians, as is clear now. This subject was swept under the carpet in the USSR. But now it's well-known that Khatyn was the Ukrainian "achievement." The same thing occurs here. These are the same people with the same behavior.
- Why so few people went to the militia at the initial step?
- There was no recruitment. My friend came to a collecting point. He was a regular officer with a military card. He was asked: "Do you have children?" He said he had two. He was not taken. Single and young men and ex-militaries were taken.
- Have you heard that hospitals on the territories occupied by junta are filled with raped women and even juvenile girls?
- I've heard about this. I myself didn't see that. But I believe in that because I saw these nationalists.
- Mikhail Georgievich, can we state that the Ukrainian government conducts the genocide of the Donbass population?
- How do you estimate: the government is just bombing a civilian town that contains militiamen consisting of the town residents? Instead of talking with residents and sending a truce envoy? Why was not this done? Why shelling of the town started after that?
And the phosphorus bombs? I saw these burns. Six people with these burns were taken to us. I saw all this and I'm ready to confirm this by oath.
Did Poroshenko send any negotiators? Just to ask: "What do you want?" The people just wanted to feel themselves humans. Nobody began talking with us. And the war started.
- Would you like the same shelling, the same war to begin in the Central and Western Ukraine? In order for they might feel the same as your compatriots? In order for they understand that it's bad to kill civilians?
- By no means! What hahhens in Ukraine now, this is the actual fascism. It should be understood correctly. Donbass is a place where people aren't separated according to nationality; where Russians, Ukrainians, Tatars, Armenians, Jews, and Uzbeks drink brandy at one table. We take snacks and reason about religion. A wonderful picture.
- How does your transition to a peaceful life occur?
- My friends in Russia helped me to move to Russia. When we arrived, it became clear that a surgeon and a primary care doctor are needed in one of the town hospitals. And we were taken, my wife and me. We're gradually settling down, getting accustomed to a peaceful life. As for me in person, it's only a pair of weeks that I ceased to shudder at night and to jerk when hearing the sounds of wedding fireworks. I'd like to wish the peace and quiet life to everybody.
The interview and text by Andrei Omel'chenko.
I ask you to pay attention to the following interesting facts:
1) The war criminals are firing at spots where civilians are gathered. In this particular case, in the upper photo, the targeted shelling was aimed at a spot where people were taking water. Do not believe those who says that Ukronazis are animals. It is natural for animals not to touch each other when drinking water together.
2) The war criminals use phosphorus ammunition.
3) The war criminals use military pharmacology while committing their crimes. Hence, there's somebody who organize its delivery and signs the corresponding orders for regulating its use someway. Thus, the war crimes are not episodic; instead, these are of systematic and organized character.
4) To mention once more: "This happened on the Day of trinity."

Mon ami m’a raconté.
