When Gabriel handed his mother a paper cutout with Chinese characters “Mama, Wo Ai Ni”, or “Mom, I Love You” in English, the lady was really moved by her son’s special gift for Mother's Day.
“I never expected him to learn so much in such a short time. It was really sweet,” she said.
Gabriel was one of the 72 students at Brazil’s first bilingual high school of Portuguese and Chinese, who expressed love to their mothers in such a Chinese way during the school’s Mother’s Day celebration on Friday.
The school opened on February 9 in Rio de Janeiro under the patronage of the local education department and China's Hebei Normal University, focusing on mathematics and combining lingual trainings of Portuguese, Chinese and English.
During the past three months, students learnt not only the Chinese language, but many cultural traditions like musical instruments, chess, Taiji, brush calligraphy and paper-cutting.
